Pacific Sands Academy provides an opportunity for teens and families to pursue their education with a true sense of freedom. Teens find and follow their interests while studying traditional and nontraditional high school subjects—and pursue various topics of interest, earning credits while doing so.  For families, we provide  eclectic homeschool or unschool support, helping them find freedom and joy in their homeschooling journeys.

Educational Freedom For Your Family

Our Director

“We do not grow absolutely, chronologically. We grow sometimes in one dimension, and not in another; unevenly. We grow partially. We are relative. We are mature in one realm, childish in another. The past, present, and future mingle and pull us backward, forward, or fix us in the present. We are made up of layers, cells, constellations.” —Anaïs Nin

Shauna Reisewitz
Shauna Reisewitz Director/Founder
Shauna Reiseiwitz has been working in education her entire adult life, from teaching in Vanuatu in the Peace Corps in the 90’s to public school, to private school, to TA’ing at UCSC while earning her MS in Marine Sciences, to working in a district homeschool program from 2002 to 2012. It was in the program that she developed her philosophy of education, of valuing the power of self- directed family and community based learning as opposed to authoritarian teaching. She deeply understands that parents have the best interests of their children at heart, and often need alternatives to the traditional paradigm of the K-12 public education model.

Shauna started Pacific Sands Academy in 2012, while juggling other positions in various charter Homeschool Programs and District Independent studies programs. So far she has worked with 5-20 students per year, as Pacific Sands has steadily grown over time. She runs Paicifc Sands in the early mornings and late evenings when she is not working in her other position as a homeschool teacher.

In this time of Covid-19, she knows that alternatives are more necessary than ever, and hopes to provide a valuable service to many families.

Most importantly, Shauna is the mother to two teen-aged girls who she started with this paradigm of self directed learning, but both have chosen more traditional educational paths at this point. Life is funny like that.

Other teachers will be coming on as Pacific Sands grows. Please come back and meet them.
