Grades 9–12 · Independent Study

A high school diploma built around who your teen actually is.

For teens who need a break from a traditional high school that isn't working — whether from burnout, health challenges, or just wanting a different way to learn — Pacific Sands Academy offers a full, accredited path to a diploma, built entirely around their interests and needs.

How It Works

An independent studies program, not a script

Students work closely with our director, Shauna Reisewitz, to build an Individualized Educational Plan around their own strengths and interests — not a one-size-fits-all curriculum.

Interest-Led

Learn through what you love

Are you an artist, musician, athlete, cook, or entrepreneur? Earn credits pursuing your natural interests. And find interesting ways to earn standard high school credits — through documentaries, projects, and online courses. The world is your oyster!

Self-Paced

Graduate on your own timeline

Some students graduate within a month; others take several years. There's room to work around health needs, jobs, sports, or a different rhythm entirely.

1-on-1 Support

Direct access to real teaching staff

Students work one-on-one with a California-credentialed teacher who has worked with high schoolers since 1991, developing a unique, individualized program around each student.

Portfolio-Based

Graduate with something real to show

To graduate, students complete an online portfolio or presentation celebrating their strengths — plus a resume they can actually use for what's next.

Grading & Credit

Real transcripts. Real flexibility.

Every student's coursework is built to meet California's graduation requirements. Grading is based on mastery of subject matter, and AP credits are awarded to students who pass AP exams. Honors credit is occasionally awarded for exceptional work.

Meet from anywhereRegular Zoom check-ins mean students don't need to be near our campus.
Take a planned breakSome students enroll for just a year to earn credits they bring back to their regular high school.
Graduate early — or laterOur youngest graduate was 14. Others take 5+ years. We also work with adults who never finished high school.
